I've read and been advised that Rio is becoming increasingly dangerous, with people being mugged on the trail to Cristo Redentor, as well as tourists being targeted on tourist buses. Yes, Rio de Janeiro city is dangerous and the violence is out of control. Even Brazilians avoid that city.
